Reverse problems with 2002 Rancher ES
I have intermittent problems with my atv not going into reverse. It happens only when the bike is working hard (eg. when I am pushing snow). It's OK for the first 20 or 30 minutes then won't go into reverse. Sometimes I can "trick" it by shifting up a few gears and then back down. If I shut the bike off and let it rest for a half hour it is OK again.
I have tried cable adjustment and the reverse switch is plugged in. I even took it to a repair shop (not Honda) and they couldn't figure it out.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

More frequent than not the ES will hang in gear. Just try rocking it alittle when it locks. Happens to my wifes TM Rancher at times. Rock alittle and off you go.
Or possibly the use of the plow puts so much drain on the battery that it isn't getting enough juice at that time.
Charge the battery good during off plowing times (trickle charger) and see if that helps or check the battery for load drain.....may be battery is getting old and weak. Happened to my neighbor, plow for awhile and bike would quite shifting and later would die.......bad battery.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried rocking and it has worked to free me when stuck in one of the forward gears. Doesn't work in this situation though.
I will switch out the battery and give that a try. My current battery is old and I have a replacement that I haven't installed yet. I will let you know how it turns out.
