P-650 Belt Adjust, ala "nyroc"
#22
I have heard that they are aware of the belt problems and are working on a fix. I don't know if it is a recall, but they are probably going to improve their belt.
They already knew they had problems at the get go. All belts were adjusted loose. If you follow the manual's belt spec, but adjust it to the minumum, the belt will squeak in neutral. So they all came from the factory looser than they should have been and they wear a lot faster as a result. Some dealers say they came from the factory at the loose end of the belt adjustment spec. However, some guys claim over 2000 miles on a 650 belt (they don't go mud diggin in high range either) when they have adjusted it on the tight side of the spec. My belt is doing much better now it is tight, except that it squeaks in neutral.
Kawasaki's first concern is their bottom line. They sold us out on the softer belt adjusted loose thinking that they could get away with it and still make sales.
I don't mean to say kawasaki builds crap, they do their best. It is just they sometimes make mistakes and if there is a possibilty that they can get away with sweeping it under the rug, they will do it. Our belt problem is a perfect example. I think we all have been getting an average of 700 miles out of our first belts (some more some less).
They have been sticking it to the customers that have 300's and 400's with their loose front wheel bearings. Many people think there should have been a recall, instead of hoping that the dealer is willing to go to the effort to call kawi and get a free replacement instead of using loctite on the bearing.
I am sure they knew they were sticking us with a belt problem.
