Default Eton TXL 90 runs fine for 5 minutes then dies

First of all I am new to the forum. My name is Mike and I am 41yrs old. I bought an Eton TXl 90 for my nephews a few years back. They rode it until the starter relay went and then parked it for a couple years. I finally got sick of seeing it sitting there and brought it home to restore it. I changed out the battery, starter relay, spark plug, front brake cable, and a new chain. She started right up once I figured out you had to hold the brake so it would turn over. I drove it around the yard for a while and it was fine. Had plenty of power to drag me around (140lbs) so I brought it back over to them and let em have a go. It lasted about 5 minutes and then it seemed like it ran out of gas. It fires up and will idle all day just fine. Once you give it gas, its stalls out. It will fire right back up but wont accelerate. I am thinking maybe a coil, stator or maybe the CDI box. Once it cools for a half hour you can ride for about 5 minutes before it heats up again and stalls. Let me know your experiences.... Thanks in advance!

Mike

I would try to see if it fires after it dies and won't start back I have had stators do that before if it is firing it might be carberator needs cleaned they can have something in the bowl and when you run it starts sucking it up when it stops for a while it falls back down in the bowl gasoline turns like varnish when sits in a carb to long make sure clean your jets good there is ways to check all your electronics with a mutimeter but you need service manual to know the specs

Welcome to the forum 58Cobra!

I would start by checking what color spark you have when its cold compared to when it gets hot...blue is strong...yellow is weak..

Try running with the gas cap off for a while and see if the problem clears up.

Sometimes a clogged gas cap vent that's totally or partially blocked can cause symptoms like yours.

I was thinking fuel also.
A good carb cleaning is in order before getting too excited.

Have a look at the shut off valve if it has one.
I had a similar problem with a plastic valve restricting the flow enough so that it would run fine until if drained the fuel in the carb & then it would stall out. Let it sit for 5 min & it was good to go again.

try unplugging electric chock. It runs just fine when cold, however when it is at operating temperature there is no need for choke and this is the reason why it dies. I had my sons eton do this and after troubleshooting everything else this is what fixed the problem.
