Some may have seen where I said my C-Dale wasn't shifting right. I took the engine apart to look into the trans. 1st I must say this has to be the easiest engine I've taken down. There is realy nothing to it. The hardest and most time consuming part is actualy getting the engine out. Any way after I got the clutch off I noticed two of the bolts that hold the transmission cartridge plate on had backed out a little, the heads of the bolts were shinny and worn some from the clutch basket skimming the tops of them. After I got the plate and trans. out I couldnt see any other signs of wear or damadge. Everything looked brand new! no bent shift fork, worn or broke dogs, or gears, the shift drum looked amazing!(like chrome), also didn't notice anything wrong with the shift shaft or ratchet. There wasnt any metal shavings or chips anywhere, except a little in my filter. Anyway now I'm confused (as always). Could my problem have been because of the two bolts? Could those two bolts have let something come out of line even though there are many more bolts holding the plate in place? I dont think that is it but I'm no mechanic. I'm putting it back together to see if it still doesnt do right. If it dosent I'm going to take it to my dealer and let them figure it out. I'm sure its something simple and nothing major but I just dont know what I'm looking for I guess. Any help or ideas would be great! Oh! and the clutch still looks good also.

Make sure that you torque those to 23 N-M, and use blue loctite(Clean the bolts and bolt holes throrughly first). It is very important that all of those bolts are torqued correctly double check the remaining bolts.

I'm no mechanic... in fact, I'm a mechanincal moron, but I imagine that if your basket was grinding against those bolts, that would cause some hard shifting. I may be wrong though. I hope it was those bolts man.

Thanks guys. Maybe it is those bolts, I'll find out soon. 4-strokemadman,or anyone else,(I feel dumb asking this but,) what is N-M? Is that a measurment like ft/lbs? or dose it mean NO MORE than 23ft/lbs. I havent put the engine back together yet so I can always torque the bolts to specs before I do anything else. It just seems that two bolts being loose (when there are others all around them) is too simple of a fix. But I guess like I was told, I may be surprised what something as small and simple like two loose bolts will cause. I guess they are there for a reason right?

I thought 23 N-M was a different measurement than ft./lbs. Shouldn't both measuremnts be on a torque wrench?

On one side of my torque wrench is ft/lbs and the other is kilograms or something.

Thanks Ryanstones, I've never used N-M before, and I dont think I've ever had a torque wrench with it on there. Maybe I have and just never payed attention. The wrench I have now only has ft./lbs. Like I said I feel dumb asking that question. hee! hee! I do have blond hair ya know, OH! wait those sayings are just about the girls right? If there are any blond girls reading this I'm just kidding.

I'd never used it before either My brother is my first call on anything mechanical and gets me through every project. thanks 'bro. I'm really impressed you got that engine out, Cdale racer! Have you checked the valve clearances yet and were they out of spec? Really curious about that one.
