Default 05' Sportsman 700 EFI Gas Mileage Poll

New to the forum. Hello everyone. My 05 Sportsman 700 EFI is my 3rd Polaris product.
Just got the 700 2 months ago. Was checking the reserve level and upon 3 tests I can only get 5, 5.2, and 6.8 miles until I run out of gas once the Reserve warnings have appeared. Once that was done it was on to miles per Tank. Filled 4.14 gallons. Manual states 4.13.
Rode in the Forest (plenty of climbs and Snow!) Got 49 miles before I ran out. Reserve warning came on at 44.6 miles.
I was shocked that the mileage is so low for a ride that I would think most riders would be on all day. I was thinking more alomng the lines of 100 miles to the Tank. My first tank of gas was filled by the dealer so I don't know how full it was. When that tank emptied out I only got 44 miles to the tank.

I would like to take a poll to see what everyone elses mileage is.
Please provide year, model, hours on machine and what type of riding you do. Also provide altitude cause I understand the Altitude can affect mileage. (that's what I'm being told about my 03 F250 Diesel).
FYI: I was riding at 8k feet.

Thanks and I look forward to spending time here

Default 05' Sportsman 700 EFI Gas Mileage Poll

I am riding at approx. 3000 feet. I have an 04 Sp700efi and I can't say exactly my mpg, but I know that I went about 40 miles on a ride and when I returned, had about 1/2 a tank left. I was loaded with gear and had my wife on the back riding double. we had lots of hill climbs and we did some rack deep mudding.

I have a 2005 Polaris Sportsman 700 EFI and when I was breaking the motor in at 5 to 10 hours, I checked and I got about 35 miles out of a half a tank. I now have about 38 hours and 315 miles and I'm guessing I get around 80 miles to a tank.

i have an '05 700 EFI...when just cruising dirt roads, I get between 25-30 miles per gallon....last weekend we did a techinical ride, no cruising for half the ride...we drove approx. 25 miles up an arroyo, dirt, mud, climbs, water, etc.....then went out to a dirt road and drove back, total miles was 60 and I still did not hit reserve, had about 1/4 tank left. I drove 96 miles one day and still did not hit reserve and that was cruising speeds about 30-40 mph....did climb up about 2000 feet in elevation to get back up to where i started, but on rough dirt roads....

Makes me think that something is wrong with the EFI. I forgot to say how many hours are on it. I'm at 13 hours now after 2.5 tanks of gas. All of this has been snow riding and I'm doing about 15-20 MPH. Sometimes faster but not for long.
I don't know if it's all the stop and go, cuz you have to rev up over 3500 to get it moving.
While cruising at 20-25 mph I'm at about 4500rpms.
I'll wait and see if other riders chime in with low hours.
Not looking good so far.

Thanks for the replies and keep'em coming!

05 Sportsman 800 twin EFI approx 1300ft altitude

alot of it has to do with break in, thats exactly how my 800 behaved, on the first tank i only got about 20 miles out of it, second tank, about 25 miles, third tank, about 40 miles, and now on my 4th tank, ive ridden about 50 miles and i have about a half of a tank left. a reserve tank should last you like 25 to 30 mi

The snow will kill your mileage....your motor is working harder and your tires are spinning more than you think....it also causes the clutch to slip more....thats part of your problem....

I only have around 450 miles on my machine, its been getting good gas mileage since new, my riding has been from about 4500 - 11000 feet in elevation...

Elkbow is right about the snow - it kills your mileage. Don't forget your EFI needs to run and will run richer as the temperatures drop (to keep the mixture right), so it is reasonable to assume your mileage will be a bit better in the summer just because of the warmer temperatures.

Our 2 '04 SP 700s get about 18-20 mpg riding at about 9000 feet and that is using high range (15-20 mph lots of turns and a few straight aways) about 70-80% of the time. In the deep snow, at the same altitude, with lots of low range and lots of tire spin it drops to 14-15 mpg.

I have an 04 700efi and I just got back from a ride this past weekend here in WV at about 2500 elevation and I got 60 miles on a tank of gas and still had one fuel bar left. It was most cruising on old railroad beds. Times we were running 50-65 mph for steady time periods. I've noticed my mileage slowly improving also. Last time I only got about 50 miles on mine before I had the fuel light start flashing on mine.
