Default Need help , starter is only spinnig

I have a ī98 SP 500 , but she want not start easily.
The problem is, that the starter donīt crang the engine lond enough over. Only a few degree .
I already change ... the bendix, the starter, the solenoid, the batterie , adjust the exhaust valves, brought the flywheel closer to the bendix, fit a needle bearing for the bendix, check the ball from the decompression system.

Now Iīm a little bit down. Spend a lot of money and time on this problem and canīt fix this damp think.

Here in the northern part of germany is no polaris dealer to have it fixed by experienced mechanic.

My last chance are your guys.

Have annyone an idea, what more I should try ?

cheers

reinhold from germany

Reinhold, try the sp 500 rope starter? Can u pull it and turn the engine over? Also does the starter act like it's too weak to turn the engine over or does it just turn over then stop like you have let off the starter button? Go thru and check all of your wiring and where there are connectors for the wires take them apart and clean the connections and put die electric grease on them. Polaris's connectors do not seal very well. Had to do this on a friends '01 sp400 and 500. They were both overheating when it was 20 Deg. F. The connections were corroded and the fans would not turn on. I hope this helps some.

Thx Mike for your answer.

before I changed the batterie and the solenoid , i took a verry good look to all the electric connections of
the starter system.
the other point.... , its almost unpossible to start the engine with the rope starter.
Ones in the wintertime I tryed to start her by the pull starter..... than the engine kicked back and I could not
feel my finger for a day.

Now Iīm guessing ,that maybe the spring from flyweight which control the decompression ball, is to weak.
Therefore I never have a good decopression by the starting procedure.

Iīm on the right track now?

for any other good ideas , Iīm still verry thankful.

Reinhold

What about the automatic decompressor the engine is suposed to turn over with the decompressor on untill the engine reaches a certain speed then turn off for full compression. This might be problem, just my 2 euros

The spring on the compression release can be installed wrong. This makes it almost impossible to start.

@Bretmann
certainly is oil in the engine.
before I go with the bike on the fun track, I do always the dip-stick and radiator-cab check.

@highwaymann and @cornbread2
yes I will have now a closer look to the decompression system.
unfotunately has my polaris workshop manual not a accurate foto how the spring should be fitted.
but I will try to fit the spring in all possible positions. And I will reduce the valve clearance under the factory specs. (only for test )
Just to be sure, that the exhaust valve is a bit open when the starter is clicks in.

Thx for your answers so far.

Reinhold
