Default Battery for 2003 600 Sportsman

Does any one know where I can get a battery other than the dealer? $90.00 at the dealer and most of the auto places here don't carry a battery for an 03 600--they do have them for an 02 700, is this the same battery?

Any other models share the same battery?

By the way, I had to take all the rear plastic off to get the battery out. It was locked in the battery box by an accumulation of dust and mud that had the battery locked in the box. What a pain.

Thanks for any help.

Yes, the 02 700 battery is the same as in the 03 600. You had better luck finding an aftermarket battery than I did. I searched far and wide then cross-referenced battery suppliers and found one, but is was a little different, the terminals attached differently and it was just a hair taller than the stock battery so the seat wouldn't latch. Finally I got sick of the seat not latching and bought a Polaris battery.

The old batteries are a booger to get out. I made pull handles by running some wire through the terminal eyelets and then through a deep well socket as a handle, then gave it a good pull, out she came.

i had to replace my battery as well (03 700) i tryed a different battery, from Sears, but that would over volt the system. so i spent the little extra cash and got a polaris replacement.

I'm about to replace mine too. I tried one day to take it out and go swap it, but couldn't get it out. I'll try the wire trick, I'd prefer that than what I was going to do.. take the whole bike to the dealer and like a dweeb tell them that I couldn't get it out by myself.

Does it not use a 12 volt battery? If its just the amps that does not matter. Amps are like a gas tank on your bike. The more amps the bigger the tank. It will just hold more juice is all, but still puts out the same voltage.

one word:

WALMART

--- take your battery with you and just match up the size ... i found one for my 2004.5 500HO that was a direct match.

The battery for the twins is different than anything you will find on the shelf. I think Polaris over-engineered the charging system for the lack of a back-up pull start with a bigger battery and a 300 watt alternator.

James- i'm not sure what the problem was, i put the new(sears) battery in it. started good, but when i would be riding at higher rpms(say 4000) there would be smoke coming from the pod... i didn't want to mess around with anything so i just got the polaris battery. it could have been something simple. or not even problematic with the battery, but it only happened with that battery.
