question about removing and bypassing speedometer
#1
I am thinking about replacing the factory speedometer on my 02 Sportsman with a trail computer. My question is can I connect some of the wires in the factory speedo harness so my AWD will work the way it is supposed to? I still want to be able to use the switch to turn the AWD on and off.

It wont work. The Speedo is a crucial part of the 4WD electrical system. If it is not in the system there is nothing to tell the 4wd when to turn on and off. There is a speed sensor in teh front right that sends info to the speedo and the speedo sends signal to the 4wd.

I saw that post searching around. Could you e-mail me the specifics on where and how you changed the wiring?

The brown/white wire (wire E) on the speedometer is where the AWG system get the ground to make it work. 12 volts on this wire would be normal with the AWG system on and the 6 prong plug removed.
You can "test" the AWG system by bypassing the speedometer. Remove the 6 prong plug and use a straighten paper clip to slide the brown/white wire out of the 6 prong plug. Put the 6 prong plug back on the speedometer and tie the brown/white wire to ground. If the AWG system works you can leave the speedometer bypass, just be careful when you turn on the AWD switch.
You can run it with the speedometer bypassed but the AWD rpm safety will be bypassed also. I think the speedometer is also the engine's high rpm safety cutoff.
firehawk356, check your email. Let me know if you got it.

Thanks freedom, I didnt get your e-mail but it appears that bypassing the speedo could potentially cause other problems. By bypassing the speedo does the AWD switch still work or is it engaged all the time?

The AWG switch will still work. I sent the email after my last post.

Yes, this is all you need to do, but don't forget you will bypass the rpm safety.
