What Oil in the Sportsman 800
#1
Just got a hella deal on a Sp800 EFI. Reading the manual and they call for Polaris (of course) 2W50 Synthetic. I always ran Mobile 1 0W40 through my ATP 500 HO, Mobile 1 has won most if not all of the Automotive oil comparisons hands down for about 15 years. What do the rest of you Sp800 guys run in the crankcase? I have never heard of a 2W50 viscosity rating, do you think Polaris is doing that just to push their own brand of Lubes?

QBALL, Use the polaris oil change kits, they are as expensive or sometimes cheaper than other oil and filters, plus it is already a full synthetic. The polaris oil change kits for twins are 2w50 and that is what you should run in those machines.

Koerbs,
Thanks, I know that's what's specced and that it's full synthetic, but if you look at consumer reports not all oils or even all synthetics are created equal. I know Mobil 1 is good oil. I look at this thing as an investment that I'll still be riding in 10 years. I want it too last.

Well this is my skool of thought. I use mobil one in everything I own, but i use the polaris stuff just cuz the dealer gave me like 5 boxes of them when I bought my wheeler.
So, if crappy conventional oil can run a v-8 engine over 1/4 million+ miles, then even a synthetic that has little known history will be just fine on a tiny 2 cyl motor that probably won't see more than a few thousand miles untill you trade off for your next atv.

The way I look at it is that Polaris wouldn't recomend oil that was bad for the machine. Mobil 1 maybe just as good but if the manufacturer recomends one brand of oil, I'm sure if you use it you won't have any problems.
