Could be an electrical problem,check connections on left side control switch first, Could be dirty connections! Use a little Nyogel (electrical grease) on connectors,plus can check under front panel at all connections. Can be as simple as a bad spark plug or short in the plug wire. Check air cleaner also. If NO difference,then you could have a mechanical problem (bad exhaust cam lobe) frequent problem on the early 500's One symptom is spitting back through carb, LACK of power. One other thing is under the front panel on the cdi module is a BLACK wire. Disconnect it and see if runs better(this is the kill wire to cdi) this eliminates the kill switch and left control switch. if it's like my 2001.. take off the seat and see if the foam around the air snorkel intake (under the gas tank cover) didn't move up and suck onto the end of the intake. 10 second fix if you're lucky. Mine does it every month or two. Idles fine until you hit the gas and then stumbles!
