2003 polaris 700 Ignition kit replacement
#1
Hello, my name is Lee and I had the issue with no spark and read the posts about the combo coil/cdi being the issue.
I purchased the ignition kit and have installed it but have a question about the connection coming off the new CDI box, the black/white and red/white wire. I understand and have found the black kill wire but am not sure about the red "hot" wire lead. The only wire that I can see in the main harness going into the HUD connector is a yellow with a red tracer? Is this where I connect these wires together? The instructions that came with the kit are very unclear about this connection! According to the Polaris service manual wiring schematic this is part of stator, regulator/rectifier circuit that goes from the stator to the regulator/rectifier to the HUD connector.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated before I finish this install and potentially fry something.
Thank you for your assistance.

Replied to your pm as to the harness jumpers that are in the hardware kit that a lot of people over look!
Plus if you still have problems when installing the jumpers, you can pm "Big600twin" as his memory should be fresh since he recently replaced the kit in his atv!I did way more 700 kits than the 600 ones and there are some differences! OPT

Thanks for your reply. I have used the necessary jumper lead wires supplied with the kit. My ATV is a Polaris 700 Sportsman model. The only question that I need answered is the instructions tell you to connect the jumper lead that comes from the new CDI black to black kill wire on the ATV and the red wire to the red wire on the ATV
The only wire that I can see in the ATV's main harness is going into the HUD connector is a yellow with a red tracer? Is this where I connect the red/white wire? The instructions that came with the kit state to plug into the red power wire on the ATV but are very unclear about this connection! According to the Polaris service manual wiring schematic the yellow/red on the ATV is part of stator, regulator/rectifier circuit that goes from the stator to the regulator/rectifier to the HUD connector.
Thanks again for your reply.

Sorry, thought you had the 600! There is a red wire tucked up under the main harness that has the connector sealed, just cut the excess plastic insulator off, OR the red wire the kit is referring to is on the regulator rectifier that has a jumper for it to the cdi!!??(Can't remember without seeing the instructions!!
ONE of the two ways mentioned above! and the cdi black wire should have a jumper if I remember to tie into the black wire! If you can't find the correct one or its missing from the kit you can always make a connector to tie into the black wire. Yellow/red is wire to the reg/rectifier. Should be a white/red that comes from the pulse coil in the stator that ties in to the cdi. Red wire with white stripe is powered with key on and used for optional accessories, etc,UNLESS kit wiring has changed since I did the last one! OPT

I installed the kit and boom it started right up. Last issue is that I am getting a "H Statr" message on the HUD and know why it is happening but do not know how to resolve it. The Kokusan kit does not have a wiring schematic included with the kit. The issues is that there is no RPM readings making it to the HUD so when the ATV senses wheel speed for more than ten seconds and no RPM's it throws the above flashing error condition. I am not sure what I did wrong? I do have voltage readings coming into the HUD so I got that part correct.
The ATV runs fine but just want to try and resolve this issue!
Thanks for your time.

First off are you charging 14volts back to the battery? If so then all connections should be correct. Did you find the unused red power wire hidden in the harness? Also could be the speedo itself malfunctioning?
Sounds like you need to retrace your steps. OPT

Again thank you for your response.
Yes there is 14 volts being shown in diagnostic mode on the HUD and 0 RPM's being shown. How does the system trigger RPM readings? Where do the readings originate from? The Stator or pickup coil or some other location?
Thanks again!!!

According to the Polaris service manual wiring schematic the yellow/red on the ATV is part of stator, regulator/rectifier circuit that goes from the stator to the regulator/rectifier to the HUD connector.
This is the same as on the 500 schematic(don't have the 700 schematic) and it shows that this yellow/red wire goes to the HUD connector as the rpm source? That's why I asked if you were charging 14-14.5 volts back to the battery. If not you have the wiring wrong? Plus were you able to find the red unused wire tucked away(almost hidden) up in the main harness? OPT
