Default HELP NEEDED 2001 Polaris Scrambler 500

Hey guys could you please help me I am in need of some knowledge. I just bought a 01 scrambler 500 4x4 and took it out today and rode with my uncle who also has a scrambler 500 4x4 but his is an 06. We raced a couple of times and his was faster . So my question is what is different on these two . I know his is completely stock minus a k$n air filter which mine has as well. From my understanding they are both the H. O. motors. Is there any updates that I could do to mine to make it the same speed with minor work? Any input is appreciated . Thanks

not sure if the gearing(sprocket size) would be differnt in the year models butthat could play apart as well as worn clutching and belt which would loose a little in the speed department.

Try a belt change, my cousin has a 2000 Scrambler 500, he changed his belt and the old belt still looked good but the new belt made the machine go from a top end of 55 to almost 60 some how.

I just put a new belt and chain on it when I bought it. I also have a new plug I need to put on as well.

Do you both weigh the same?? If not could be a factor, plus just swap machines and see if you can beat him on his while he's riding yours You have to remember too that his machine has 5 years less wear on clutch and engine internals. We've had this question since day one at my old shop!! We've even sold machines to different friends straight out of the crate and I don't know how many times one customer would complain that his friends atv is faster than his! And I admit that some identical atvs whether Sportsmans or Scramblers, etc have been noticeably faster than others like I said straight out of the crate. No two machines are identical in every respects. OPT

Yes there ain't 15 pounds difference between us. Would a clutch kit help or maybe a jet kit? Are these motors the same or have they changed ?

Engines are basically the same, same carb, but different part numbers for each model. Has same jetting 40 pilot,155 main jet along with clutches basically the same. There are parts that have been subbed to different numbers over the years and you know in 5 years certain things have been "tweaked out" as engineers see fit, just like cars, each model year of a certain car has improvements other than just body changes, some good, some bad. You can always do mods to beat him,but he can do the same! OPT
