Default Polaris 800 x2 CV Axle / Bad Transmission Spines?

Hi
I'm a novice mechanic & could use some expert input.

Looking at the back of my ATV,, the right side rear CV axle was making some racked & not turning right. Just moving it around my house the wheel would lock / bind up & not turn causing the other to spin.
I wiggled things a bit & it seemed I had a lot of play in the CV Axle up near the transmission.
I pulled CV axle out & after inspection I noted the spines on the axle where it goes into the transmission are somewhat rounded and not very defined. The receiver spines in the transmission don't look much better.
I put the axle back in & spun it & it does seem the spines aren't grabbing in the transmission, the axle is just slopping around in the transmission.
I'm not sure if getting a new CV axle with fresh spines will hold, will it? (like I said above, I'm not a mechanic so I don't exactly know what looks good or bad)
If the transmission spines are failing what are my options? Is it possible to replace the part in the transmission with the spines alone? If so will the transmission need to be pulled & dissembled to to so.

Any input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Turf mode model that has separate splined gears for each side.If the splines are really worn in this diff, one or both may need to be replaced along with seals and bearings if needed. Can get expensive. Items 5 and 8 on the splined gears. https://www.partzilla.com/catalog/po...-differential#

Thanks for the info. I was having a hard time with the diagrams trying to figure out what was what. If those need replacing I'll be taking it to the shop, that'll be beyond my expertise.

I had someone tell me I should not use Turf Mode on this. They said Turf Mode can cause damage to the unit. Any thoughts on this?
Before I had heard this I was using Turf mode around my property. I did take it out on the trails once or twice & ran it for a bit still in Turf mode before I thought to switch it to 2wd.

Thanks

We never had any problems with the turf mode at the shop(just replaced one solenoid that I can remember) but I can see over time that if the solenoid wan't working right or weak, possible that the shift fork may not have disengaged the splined gear back far enough. If that's the case then that may be what wore down the drive shaft and gear splines.

are you saying the female spine( in the bike) that you slide the cv shaft (male) spine is worn to the point where there is slop where the 2 spines mate? or inside is the issue your having. just trying to understand how you would wear the spines out

When I stick the old CV Axle that came off back in it's sloppy in the female spined gear. "Seems" like the spines on the female are worn. The spines on the male are worn too. A new axle might have enough meat on it to work but I'm thinking it'll wear out pretty fast due to the sloppy female fitting.

Just stumbled upon this old thread as I'm having the exact same issue on my 2007 800 X2. Did you end with the tranny taken apart to replace the cups?
