Default Getting ready to dig into top end on my Eiger

She's been a bit sluggish and going through some oil, although it is not really smoking badly. Ran a compression test, got 120psi, added a capful of oil into the cylinder and it went up to 150. Prolly need rings.

Couple questions before I tear into this thing. I have the service manual, but just wanted to make sure I can do this with the motor in the frame. Anything to be concerned about? Etc, etc. Not much for aftermarket motor upgrades out there that I could see. Does anybody recommend anything to wake this motor up?

Thanks.

i check this forum daily and this place is dead. i cant seem to find a good suzuki forum. if its not smoking bad and still runs good i would leave it for now. you say its running sluggish. whens the last time you cleaned or changed the air cleaner? have you ever took the carb off and cleaned it? do you use a fuel filter?

The threads not dead, its just people have other things to do now a days and can only check back once a month. Most quads you can do the top end inside the motor. Check for slop in the rod (up and down play). If any then you have to tear apart the bottom end. Get a high compression piston (wiseco probably makes one). Also, you can probably purchase an aftermarket cam and then an aftermarket exhaust. That will get you going. Check for wear on the cam, you might need a new one anyways. If your cam is worn though, I suspect a worn oil pump that needs replacing. Check for slack in the timing chain before you tear it fully apart. If there is some, it might need replacing. Make sure you buy a gasket kit and torque everything correctly. In order to work on the engine you might have to take off the plastics. Also, you need a ring compressor you can use an adjustable hose clamp, just make sure not to hurt the piston.

It's not the air filter. The compression is low. 120 ain't much to write home about.

I'll check the timing chain, piston rod, etc for wear. As far as performance parts, I don't see that Wiseco makes a piston for this motor. I can't find any performance cams, either. Looks like a cylinder bore and maybe a pipe is about all that I can find.

Its your lucky day man! Looks like I might have found you some performance parts. You can send in your old cam to webcam and they will weld it up and grind it down for $173 and then for an additional $65 they will weld up the rockers and grind them down. You should call them ahead and ask for what type of improvements this will make, but it says on there website: "increases overall performance throughout RPM range"

Heres the page link:
Web Cam Inc. - Performance and Racing Camshafts / Suzuki Eiger 400 (ATV) (03-09) SOHC 4v

Thanks, I've heard of them. May give them a shot. That's not a terrible price for a performance cam, provided it gives some performance.
