97 King Quad 300 not shifting properly
Hey y'all,
I got a king quad 300 that I picked up from a guy on Craigslist. It was not running, it shifted fine and I was able to roll it on to my trailer we shifted it into gear but as soon as it got it back it would not shift out of neutral. I've tried rocking it dragging it pushing it pretty much everything but it wont shift more than a couple gears and never to neutral. I've adjusted the shifter all the way to both ways in small increments and that didn't help any either. Any ideas on what else to try? The quad has 3000 miles and had a hard life but it doesn't seem in bad enough shape to break internally on a 30 minute drive so I'm stupped.

I don't know that model, but on the Eiger/400KQ there is a lock-out to stop you engaging any gear with the foot lever if the other lever is in reverse, if that lever is not in Hi or Lo you can't move the foot change lever, if you now have forced it, you may have all sorts of problems with the selector mechanism.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure if thats how mine works or not. I attached a picture of the upper shift assembly. When I first tried it when I got home with it I believe it wasn't in reverse. I think I would have checked that too anyway, and I was easy on it for the first few times messing with it so I don't think I would have caused any damage from that.

It is a bit different to the Eiger, which uses the same lever for Hi, Lo, Reverse. Neutral is on the foot change on them. As Dacaur wrote, all manual shift quads are a bit reluctant to change, unless the engine is running or they are moving, as they need movement between gears to line the dogs up when changing.

I've had it for awhile and tickered with it a lot so I'm kinda fed up with it. But if anyone has ideas I'm still open. I have taken off both side covers and didn't see anything wrong. The Artic cat is only $200 with lots of good parts and I have parted out equipment before so thats why I'm looking into it if someone thinks it has the same engine.
