The sheriffs are not always there, we went last weekend and they where not there, the prior weekend they where. there cool, like i sad there there to keep the riff-raff and the BS out of the area. Part of the land is Morongo Indian land and the cops tell you not to ride on it. At the top of the hill and on the back and both sides there are a far share of trails. Its enough area that you can find a spot for the kids to ride as well. Plus its close to home for a quicky ride if you want. Good stuff.

I notice that not many people mention one of the largest areas in cali - johnson valley!
I love that place - a bit of EVERYTHING. (Rocks, hills, valleys, sand dunes, washes, dry lakes, etc.)
Unfortunately its a good 8 hour drive now.. How I miss living off of camprock road. (For riding anyways - just no work there that complements my degree).
I could ride out of my 20 acre backyard into the legal area and go for a good 4 hours w/o seeing the same thing twice (except the house of course).
Anybody near LA should definately check it out. No facilities - but Lucerne Valley has nearly everything you would need.
I met blackandred warrior dude out @ pismo last year.
I do want to go again (I try to go 2x / yr) - just hopefully no wind this time.
I hate the wind there - I just leave the sand and head into town for shopping.

Hey Ridin Folks and Doroguy, glad you liked Stoddard. We're going out this Saturday for one night. Maiden voyage for my new toy hauler! Here's where we like to go, easy access, lots of riding room for kids and only about a 30-40 minute easy off road ride to the Slash X.
Get off the I-15 at Dale Evans Parkway. Turn right and go past all those folks camped next to the freeway, in other words resist the temptation to make an immediate left. Stay on Dale Evans and go down about 1 mile, and turn left on Stoddard Wells Road (I think it's the second left after Juvi Hall). Go down that dirt road for about 1, 2, 3 miles (go past the turn off for the off road track ) and you'll see all the toy haulers. There's plenty of staging areas as that road is well maintained and goes for miles. From there you can go most anywhere on really well maintained trails. We usually do a lunch at the Slash X, it takes about 40 minutes to get there from that particular staging area, and is fun. (Don't ask me how to get there off road as I just follow everyone else.) This weekend we're taking the kids there so they can participate. (A 9 and 4 year old, the road is that easy.) There's also a fun ride to the ostrich farm from there as well, both an easy way and a more challenging way. That ride also takes about 30 minutes.
Ridin Folks, go to www.barstowpokerrun.com and you'll get directions to the Slash X from the freeway. Highway 247 is about two to three exits past Outlet Center Drive, it's in the center of Barstow. I think that the exit is called Barstow Road, exit, turn right and go down about 12 miles to the Slash X. That web site has the phone number for the Cafe as well. Speaking of the Poker Run, we're plannign to go this year, I hear it's a blast.
As for this weekend, look for an American Freedom 17' pulled by a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a 19' Atitude pulled by a Chevy Tahoe. That'll be us. We're planning to head out on Saturday morning and stay until Sunday afternoon. Stop by and say HI!

It was real green, but not to wet at all. Some of the whoops had water between them, which my kids thought was great, but overall pretty dry. I can't go out this week, cub scout camping trip, but next weekend we are going to Randsburg.
BTW - my wife is looking to get a fully automatic quad, any suggestions?
