Default Very confused on spinning sound after shut off

91 Big Bear 350

I 100% thought it was the one way bearing for the primary clutch, but I just pulled it off and it seems operational and in decent condition considering.

The whirling sound is 100% coming from the clutch side, its a gear or something spinning that goes on for 4-5 seconds after every shutoff, what gives guys? I'm sort of confused!

Upon further inspection to the bearing I would say maybe it is shot.....to my mechanically trained eye it looks worn....there are flat spots on the outer side of the sprags, I'd reckon that's enough for it to not work correctly under engine load, correct me if I'm wrong fellas.

A lot of quads do it, I always assumed it is the one way bearing but, as long as it grips when starting, have never worried much about it. I guess it will promote wear on starter bearings to have the whole starter system whizzing round when the engine is running.

Edit, Thinking about it, it can't be revolving after the engine stops as it would be going in the correct way to lock. Only possibility is the engine stops on the compression stroke (which it will as this is against compression pressure) then is shoved backwards by compression, spinning up the starter in the reverse direction.

I think I explained it not well! It's not the starter at all I can definitely hear the sound and it's the clutchs still spinning for sure. the sounds clearly radiate from the right case

It doesn't sound factory to me at all, I've had a beater or 2 that has done it but I never cared and rid on, but I got this bike from a wildlife park so it was well maintained, and for cheap, so I want to reliability check it and make sure its as fresh as when it rolled off that dealership lot, it has lots of potential and wasn't ragged on too much.

Can't hurt to put a new bearing in I'f it;s not the problem anyway haha, if I'm somehow wrong I do have a starter one way on standby for spare

Will update this once the bearing gets here and I install it, probably a week or so, could maybe help future browsers since It's so hard to find info on 87-89 Big bears....
