ATVs Under Attack Again Today....................
#93
When I saw this topic come up I really didn't want to reply, but it is happening again!!!! The '80's saw the end of 3-wheelers all together. I really don't think it will come to that sort of drastic measure again with quads, but the pattern is so similar that it's scary. Somehow it's the sport segment of the industry who seems to always suffer after having an explosion of new model releases and sales.
The problem is not the machine, it's the irresponsible indivual who is operating it. I'm not just talking about not wearing protective gear, but also people who do not respect their neighbors by having a quad that breaks the sound barrier when it's fired up, and those who do ride (illegally) on paved roads, and most of all those who booze it up before a ride. This seems like no big deal to most of us, but it leaves non-ATVers with a bad impression about us and our sport. Also, there are many un-responsible parents who allow their children to ride an ATV that is too large and powerful for a child to ride unsupervised and many times without any shred of protective gear. When the kids do get hurt they look for someone else to blame. A little commom sense goes a long way people!
I have been involved with ATV's since I was a kid in the early '80's, so I am definatly not new to the sport. I have seen so many people who have no experiance riding going out and buying the fastest, baddest thing they could find for bragging rights simply to end up destroying the quad or theirself.
I was shocked last year for Christmas when I went to buy my 7 year old son a brand new Suzuki LT80 or LT50 and the dealer was giving me lip about the LT80 being too large and/or powerful for him. Little did he know that my son had been riding and racing a used LT80 since he was 5 years old. I did end up buying a new LT50 for him, but it is crazy for the government to tell us what we are allowed to buy for our children simply by age. There needs to be some sense applied to these laws.
I understand there should be some concern, but sometimes these laws are ridiculous.
I guess the CPSC should try to ban automobiles being there are so many accidents every year, oh and they should shut down all the fast food burger places to eliminate heart disease!!!
So, I guess here we go again!!!!

ATVA Response
I'm pleased to see the ATVA/AMA step up to contradict the recent ATV bashing by sneeky anti-use groups.
I'm a charter member of ATVA and joined blueribbon coalition 2 days ago in responce to this attack. ATVA is OUR National organization.
Quad riders unite! JOIN ATVA NOW!!
JOIN BLUE RIBBON COALITION
These groups can only support us if we $$upport them. Do the right thing!

Man,it's late, I've been partying and this stuff is still on my mind. I am so pissed. I've read every post. Dude, I have no idea yet if the Blue Ribbon people have done anything yet but I belive they will. I think that our only power is in numbers and contacting the right people to be on our side. Somebody mentioned Fox news, lets get Bill O'Riley to look into this fiasco. He will be unbiased. Write to him via e-mail on Fox.com. You all are great to care but we have to do something to make a difference and change the ideas of many others who will just follow the pack.
Josh, my "evil" stepson who I love dearly has decided he wants to sell the 2001 Arctic Cat 400 for a Warrior. Good Grief! i suppose boys must have thier toys. I told him that he can't ever!!!!! take his girlfriend double ever again, no **** on the back! No more mud, water, hunting etc.....
The boy has a NEED for SPEED, and never without a helmet. He just thinks he can use my 500 when needed. His lesson, better than any he will get in school, is that he will handle all dealings with the sale (ie: phone calls, placing ads etc) which he thinks is eaaaaaasy. HA! If he can sell it on his own it will be a good life lesson. We all have to be good parents, care about our kids and ensure their saftey to the best of our ability.
Bla, Bla, Bla, forgive me, I'm female, and now I gotta go e-mail Bill O.
