Default AEON COBRA 180RS QUAD.(really need help!)

Hi Everyone,
What my problem is !! I bought a AEON COBRA 180RS QUAD 2004 model
for my son as he had a very bad year last year due to cancer. He loves the quad
as it has reverse so he's in his eliment.
Problem is that since I bought it I have to start it by kicking it as the eletric start will
not work, this really takes the shine off it for him as he can't start it himself.
I put power straight from the battery to the starter to rule out dud starter (the starter does turn but not using start switch)
Am I missing something (is there a proper procedure to starting) does it need to be
in neutral/brake applied/etc/etc???????
Unfortunately I'm no expert and no mechanic so would really be so gratefull for
any help, but more than me my son would be over the moon and he honestly deserves it.
Please help .
Thanks John & little Harry

I've never heard of Aeon Cobra, but I'm betting most quads work very similar.

Every quad I've seen has a safety mechanism that prevent the quad from cranking while in gear, or it won't crank unless the front or rear brake is applied. Mine uses the brake switch as an interlock (the same switch that lights up the brake lights). But we're getting ahead of ourselves...

First, do you hear a "click" from a relay when you try to start up the quad with the igntion and/or start button? Make sure you are in neutral and apply all brakes when doing this, and make sure the brake lights are lit up when attempting to start.

Uncover your battery and follow the big red leads to the starter motor. It will go to a big relay (the starter solenoid) and then on to the starter. Get a screwdriver and short the two big lugs with the heavy gauge wires attached together. Don't mind some minor sparking - starter motors draw a lot of current, hence the heavy wires. Does the starter turn? With the ignition on and shorting across the solenoid does the quad start?

If the starter doesn't turn when shorting across the solenoid, turn on the headlights and repeat. Do the headlights go out? If you have a voltmeter measure the voltage right on the battery terminals while shorting the solenoid terminals. What voltage does it read? What is the voltage right on the starter motor terminal while shorting across the solenoid?

Report back and we'll go from there.

I really don't know much about this model but most have a starter relay box, about an inch square. On the eton it is located beside the battery on the frame, just a thought.

Hi
Just about to go out.Been up since 7:30 ,did the tests and a big thankyou!!!!!
When rear brake is in lock position turns over on the switch.
But unfortunately does not start.Took plug out and checked for spark when using
switch "good spark".
At one point when removing plug it was wet so must be getting fuel,so I can't understand why it won't start.Doesn't even seem to want to start off the kick now.
So desperate just about to go to daughters 7th birthday party and feel crap as my
lads so disappointed I havn't solved problem with his quad.
Oh well another great start to a day.
Once again will really appreciate your help, hate to see the the kids down.
All the best,John /family

Hi,
Thanks for reply ,no not cleaned carb yet, could you send advise on doing
this as I will attempt tomorrow.I notice there are 2 electrical wires going to
a unit which is inserted into carb (what would this be???).
Wish I was a mechanic !!!!!!
Thanks

You say you have fuel, and you have spark, but it won't start. You could try cranking with wide open throttle to try leaning out the air/fuel mixture, or removing the air box and hand choking the intake to richen it up. If it starts then the carberator needs looking at, and check for air leaks in the intake manifold. If that doesn't work then compression checking is next.

I don't know anything specific for your quad, but many of the chinese quads need their valves adjusted every so often. They tighten up with wear and also when the engine cools, so hard starting (or no starting) when cold is the classic symptom. The other classic symptom is that once it starts it instantly runs great and will restart without hesitation as long as the engine is warm.

The two wires to the carberator are probably part of an electric choke.

I'm going to send you a private message.
