420/520 Autos and fault code 44
#1
I got a 420 auto in yesterday nothing much worked, no neutral light, gearchange didn't work and both the gear display and engine management lights were flashing fault code 44. Could get neutral via the emergency lever, though the light didn't work, and it would start and run via pull start. Anyway checked codes on the internet and code 44 is oil temperature sensor. It is at the front of engine near the water pump drain pipe, right hand side. Checked, and one wire was parted and the other chewed at the sender unit, so rodent damage. Soldered the broken wire, taped both up and everything now works. What I can't weigh up is why the temp sender should make the gearchange system throw such a spectacular wobbler, in fact why the temp unit should affect the gearbox at all.

Same problem on my f30 2016 320d lci engine b47, came up one day, didnt have any idea why, just fitted a new turbo. Turns out I needed to do a air mass sensor test in ista. You can only do this test with version 4.45 and above. I got 4.49 and the option to do a test was there. Did the test, confirmed it was fixed and it went away.
