Would you just use some liquid gasket instead or something, or try without?

Rather than removing the gasket, I think some people plane their jugs down on the bottom side to make them shorter, and therefore increase compression...but you won't catch me doing crazy stuff like that!

I saw your email on this...I can't say I counted the links when I put mine on. Plus, when I switched gearing, I put on a new chain at the same time.

Sorry.

Rocky Mountain had a chain breaker on sale for like 3.99 the other week. I almost got it, but couldn't warrant spending $8 for shipping then, even though it would still be a good deal.

To shorten a chain I just set the chain on a bench vise, open it enough to clear the pin in the chain, and use a drift punch to drive it out. You can get the pin started without the punch, just using the hammer. Once you get it moving, a screwdriver might be able to drive it on out.

Yes, trash the base gasket. Use a VERY thin layer of rtv gasket maker instead. I do that on every engine I rebuild. Easiest way to gain a bit of compression.

Another thing you can do (which requires a LOT of determination) is mill the jug down with sandpaper.

I clamped a piece of sandpaper to my workbench. Then measured all the corners of the jug and took note. Then start sanding and measuring to be sure I'm sanding it evenly. Since the middle of the jug is steel and the outer is aluminum, the outside will sand easier than the inside which might result in a slight oil leak, but it won't leak compression. Don't sand too much or the piston will slam into the head. Its probably safe to sand away the thickness of the head gasket, but better measure everything first to be sure.

Oh, almost forgot. If you shorten the jug, the cam chain will be on the long side. So you'll have to mill down the spot on the jug where the chain tensioner bolts in.... Or else somehow make the tensioner longer.

Suprisingly, thats how the foot Pegs came. I noticed that he ones on my Gpa's 300 suxuki are flat with ridges to make your feet stick better and the 230 was round. Guess thats how they come on the 230 shaft driven >.<. Also, mines a 86, one of the first

Can't say anything bad about the shaft driven ones though. Was driving beside my gpa in his truck and it registered me going 52mph, which is faster than what I was told they would go

Anyways, heres a closer look on the pegs:

Well, I stepped out and looked at it and there is no weld marks what-so-ever on there to show that it had pegs on it at one time or another.

On a side not, in about 15min, check my garage, I'm putting all my quads on there

I have a 85 shaft drive and it doesnt have those footpegs. It has regular ones.
