Default Help with crazy project

Hey guys, hoping someone knows a little more than me about this. I have a taotao ata125, which I disassembled, and I am currently turning it into a lawn mower. I know, sounds strange. But i'll post pics when I get done. My question is what is required to make the motor run. Like if im gonna run it on a bench. I figured it would just be the 2 coil wires need to be hooked up to the wires coming out of the side case? Any ideas?

Not hardly.

You've left out the CDI and all of its associated wiring (power, trigger, kill switch, and output to the ignition coil).

Wiring up all this stuff is *absolutely required* and a major endeavor. What happened to all the original wiring and parts?

I think I have most of it. I purchased it from a guy who hacked up most of it. But Im pretty sure I do have the cdi and probably the harness for it. I wish someone had a wiring diagram for these little boogers...lol. So just to clarify, the coil comes off into the cdi, then the cdi runs down into the side cover for triggers and such.

I don't have a wiring diagram for your specific quad, but there are lots of different wiring diagrams out there that will apply to this section or that section. You do some measuring on one section at a time (ignition, charging, kill switch section) then compare to existing diagrams and start to make an amalgam out of them.

CDI's have a lot of electronics inside (all very necessary). Basically they take power from some source (moderately high voltage AC from the stator, or DC voltage from the battery) and make an internal 100 to 300 volt internal DC supply. This supply is used to charge up a capacitor. At the proper time a small trigger signal from a small pickup coil in the stator fires the CDI which dumps the several hundred volt DC charge on the internal capacitor onto the ignition coil primary. These two form a high frequency resonant circuit which rings back and forth at 30 KHz or so. The ignition coil secondary winding (stepped up in voltage by a factor of 100 or so) is also resonant at the same frequency and generates the spark that ignites the fuel.

There is also the kill switch input to the CDI that disables the moderately high voltage supply that charges up the CDI capacitor. Without the high voltage charge the spark stops and the engine stops too.

All of these have to work to get spark...
