This is what my plug looks like after riding today. Its an old plug and has seen a few jetting changes.

A carb change can sometimes help, but don't go too big. Now it is true that you can jam a gigantic carb on and you can make it work, but it will be a real job of work. I had a friend who put a monster Mikuni carb on a Honda 350cc single. It was like 40 mm or so. Maybe bigger. A real monster. It was supposed to be pre-jetted... yeah, right. He stayed with me for several weeks while he worked on it just like a regular job. Like 6-8 hours a day, every day. At night he poured over all my carb and carb parts books. Bought a bunch of very carefully selected main jets, idle jets, jet needles and needle jets. It would barely start when he started and I got to admit it ran almost perfect when he finished... almost ! Now, I don't think it had any more Horse Power than stock, but it did run pretty smooth. Over 100 hours of careful tuning, another $150 in parts (at wholesale prices, no less) and all we can say is that it runs smooth ? I don't think it was worth it. Who knows... maybe it will be worth it to you.

mjlar, did you get the ticking noise figured out?

I've never heard of anyone changing the air jet.... But, I haven't talked to everyone and I dont know it all either, so....

I'm going to install the 10 pilot tonight and see how it works tomorrow. (I still have that #$&^&* oil leak from the valve cover to fix again anyway). My headlight came in the mail today too. Original suzuki box! Cool! So, I have a few good reasons to tear the plastic back off, yet again.</end quote></div>

Me too.. plus the ticking.

We'll be doing the same **** probably within the same couple days. lol

Just a hunch but I'm going to try a 1 step colder ngk plug D8.. Raised compression should be a colder plug.

Randy, maybe we got air leaks-- were the only ones having this idling problem?

I'm going to douse the rubber boot in WD40 (after the carb) and see if she stumbles during the warm up cycle. I did notice a hair crack in it.. maybe thats it?

Yes, crack in boot is bad, loose clamps are bad.. It is supposed to be a sealed system, from air filter to exhaust, with exception of vent lines on carb, but I believe they have some sort of check vavle..

Anyone else have idling issues with the TM swaps? What size carb and pilot do you run?

It should be close on the pilot if its a big bore or not.

How about needle and main?

Randy, and to anyone else running a TM28 or TM##, lets all post our tunes in here:

If we all post our tunes, it *should* cut down on tuning time and the need to buy ridiculous amounts of jets and needles.

Unfortunately, don't think it will help much.
To many variables in each bike, lid, no lid, hi flow air filter, stock filter, condition of valves, cam, pipe, altitude, cold, warm, hot, cracked boot, weak spark, strong spark..
My 400ex (no lid, pipe, etc.) was jetted WAY different than my buddies with identical set-up but different brand pipe......same year bikes, same air filter, same header, just different slip on exhaust...

I have the 10 pilot in. It runs at least as good as the 12.5 and possibly better. For the first time ever I can actually turn the air screw out too far! Every other time I could just turn the air screw until it fell out and it will run better with each turn. Now, I'd say I'm about 2 turns out.

My light works great! I'm impressed. Quad runs great! I got the oil leak fixed (finally). W/o a manual, you wouldn't believe all the crap you have to go thru to get it to stop leaking. RTV has to go on all the bolts as well as the mating surfaces. Careful not to get any RTV on the cam bearings when it gets torqued down either! It will squeeze out and get on the bearings!

Next step is to cross reference the needle I'm using and order a one-step leaner needle. I'm just curious. Other than that, my carb is done. Plug looks good, it runs great, starts 1st kick,,,, what more can I ask?

I also need to get a 37 tooth rear sprocket (hopfully for less than 50 bucks - ouch). .... and some front shocks.

PG, do you really think I should unload 300 bones on a set of works???? Even if I can get a set of 250 shocks for $40? (I love the 250 shocks - like riding on a magic carpet thru the trails - compared to mine is like riding an old log wagon)
