Exact date???? No way to tell. The sports only have kick start, no battery. The 85 and 86's have eccentric chain adjustments, while the 87 and 88's have the screw type adjusters. The left hand side of the cylinder should say 229cc. If its a 89 or 90, it will say 246cc.

The 10th digit of the vin will be the yr, but if its been ground off, who knows....

All other changes are internal.

The TM28 works well no matter what you do. Back when I first started tinkering with these things (like on page 30 something), I went to the 28mm carb and thought it was my biggest improvement per dollar. The stock carb is ok on the bottom end, but doesn't flow enough for topend performance. Selling your stock carb wasn't a bad idea so long as you were willing to replace it with something.

Because of Malhombre, Bprewit, and Sudco I just had to try the 32mm. I had so much faith in them that I figured chances were good it would work.

But on 9/17/2008 I said, "I'd hold off on buying stuff until I can give a full report. Right now I'm still in development stage.... Alpha testing really. Haven't even made it as far as beta yet. "

The Lakota manifold is probably a waste unless you're willing to try out a 30mm.... The 30 is the same size as the 32. With a dial-a-jet, it might work. Like I said, the 32 will work too, but you'd need a small airfilter or some kind of restriction. And that's the very thing I wanted to get away from.

I'm trying to get the Lakota tuned up now with the same 32mm carb I was using on the quadsport (minus the dial-a-jet). I'm using the stock 230 airbox and kn filter. So far, I'm up to a 310 jet! And its a 290cc high compression setup! There's no way a 32 will work right on a little bitty 230. Surely not the roundslide version anyway.

The 28 is guaranteed to work though. You'll need the 5L1 needle, a smaller pilot jet, and either a selection of main jets or a set of drill bits to drill the main. If you really want to get it running perfect, you'll need a smaller needle-jet too, but its not really required. I'll know more about the needle-jet when mine arrives next week. I've got the power up to a point now where the clutch can't keep up. Its slips for a sec in 4th n 5th gear. Never did that before.

When I finally wear out the stock piston, I'll port match the 28carb along with the bore job. I'm carrying this thing to the end! Too much money and time in it to stop now.

Waaaay to big. The stock manifold is even a hair too big. But it will work with a decent hose clamp. Put it this way, the 28mm carb will fit inside the 32.

Back when I had the 28 on the lakota, I used a piece of radiator hose to make the 28 bigger so I could clamp it on. It was only temporary so I could ride the lakota while the 230 was down. It worked pretty well.

Stand in line for the side cover. They sell for about $160 bucks new.

About the oil... Read this and pay particular attention to anything grayracer says. http://www.thumpertalk.com/for...ad.php?t=698208&page=5
