What needle do you have? What writing is on the needle? You can try washers under the clip. Nothing wrong with that. Just be sure the needle doesn't come all the way out of the hole when you open the throttle.</end quote></div>

Ill take a look at the needle tomorrow. If the washer idea wont mess anything up then i guess ill give it a shot tomorrow too. Then ill know if i'm on the right track</end quote></div>

The problem with the washer is you might screw up your idle and there is a danger of the needle coming out of the hole. But 1 washer shouldn't hurt anything. Maybe more, who knows...

Ok i just took the carb off again and took a look at the needle. The numbers are very hard to read but I'm pretty sure it says F21L. I tried the washer in there and it pulls a lot harder around 3/4 throttle but it still has a huge hesitation if i punch it at all

The first number should be a 5. Sudco lists a 5F21 for a VM26 which could be what you have. You coud try a 5L1 needle. That is richer than a 5F21.

Any idea what carb you have? Is it a roundslide or flatslide? Mikuni?

I still think the needle you have isn't rich enough for the amount of air you're drawing. You can mount the needle in a cordless drill on high speed and use sandpaper to give the needle more taper. Just do it to the bottom part of the needle. If you sand the top part it will make your idle too rich. The best thing to do is take the carb off and open the throttle to the spot you are having trouble and make a mark on the needle with a marker. Then put the needle in the drill and start sanding. You should notice the engine running a little better the more you sand.

Yeah that could be what the number is, it is very worn where it is written. unfortunately the person i purchased the machine from had no specs on it and he bought it the way it is. all he was told is its an aftermarket phase five racing carb. I cant find any info on what phase five is so I'm kinda lost. It is a Mikuni though, I took a few pictures, Im sure you know more than i do about it than i do lol.

Looks like a stock 230 carb to me. Phase 5 probably means a jetting package. Not much you can do to a carb except jet it to run right, lol. I think White Bros used to bored them out to 27mm instead of 26mm.

Just use the stock carb from ebay. If it runs right, thats about all a carb will do for you. Not like there is a secret "trick" you can do to a carb to get more power. Just tune it to run correctly is all you can do.

What air filter do you have?

haha that's nice lol shoulda just bought a stock rebuild kit or something in that case lol. Im not really looking for crazy power all i do is trail riding so im more interested in just getting it to run right without the hesitation. Its got a K&N filter in it so that might be whats leaning out the mixture I'm gonna pull the plug too and see how it looks after adding that washer under the needle

I figured you had a kn filter. My stock carb was running so lean I had the needle clip at the last bottom slot and I drilled the jets out.... And I figured it was STILL a bit lean.

I believe the stock 230 had a 5HN23 needle and the stock 250S (same carb) had a 5HN31 needle. The 5HN31 is the same thing as the 5L1. I think the 5HN31 is a bit fatter than the 5HN23, so getting a 5L1 to replace the stock 230 needle is a step in the wrong direction. Just wait till you get the stock carb and see how that runs and then we'll go from there. The problem is I have no way to know how big a 5F21 is. Maybe you could do like you said n just get a rebuild kit that comes with the right needle. I think you'll still be on the last clip, but at least it would run pretty good!
