Skinner, your boss is paying luxury taxes on his airplanes. I think around here, property taxes are around 1% of property value. When we almost bought the 1/2 million $$$ box house. Property tax was over $500 a monthWe pay about $100 a month now Neighbors pay less, like Skinner said. They've lived in the house since it was built.

That seems to be about what my friend pays for his. $500...hell I don't even pay that for my portion of rent! EEEK. I'm sure granny's is low as she's owned the house since new (1957) and lived in it for most of that except around the early 70s when they (granny, grandpa & my aunt) lived in Hinkley (the town from Erin Brokovich. Mom didn't heed granny's advice to wash her hair in bottled water....says her hair never was the same. ) She just put a new roof on this summer, so they might reasses the house.

skinner, is your boss a pimp or a drug dealer? could he maybe share a fraction of the wealth with the working stiffs? He sounds like Montgomery Burns. We may have to re-name you Smithers. So does he have a Chef and food-taster on staff?? which plane...sheesh. is that when the limos are out of commission? Hmm, which Rolls do i want to drive from the mansion to the cottage this week?naw, I'll fly the Lear jet instead (made by Bombardier, a Canadian company ).

on the auto hubs... isn't that all electronics, whereas manual allows you to byass the electronic feature? my guess is some sorta electronic computer doo-dad. what about starting simple and checking fuses??
in the late 90's models, when they offered Auto only, all my logger cousins had them switched to manual. apparently they said auto wasn't very good, but then i heard it was perception. so i dunno. auto hasn't let us down. occasionally, i'll lock in just because.

I think we do about $5M a year in business. Seriously, that's all. But some of our projects have been known to pull 100% profit. Bascially it costs us 1/2 of what we charge to do the work. This year isn't going to be too great. Been having to pay a LOT of OT and DoubleOT. We've done more business, but make the same amount of money. Boss says forget it. He likes the size and profitability. Why work your butt off when you can keep busy and still make the same amount in the end.
We tend to work directly for the customer, and not as a sub to a general. Though our most profitable work is as a sub to a large refrigeration company. We are working on our 10th project with them in probably 10 years. Usually do one a year, maybe less, sometimes more, at least recently. I believe last year was 3 projects (TX, FL and CA). This year is 2.
The boss has owned the planes for a while now. The Aerostar goes back to 80s at the least. He used to fly it as a corporate aircraft for his cousin. Not sure when he got the Arrow. They do run so much through the company and use it for tax breaks. Though he didn't like the $15K bill from the IRS when they disallowed the aircraft as business exemption. He fought and now prorates costs based on business/personal use. (They (him and his wife) actually paid more in taxes last year than she made. She's a teacher set to retire this year so I'm going to assume low-to-mid 40K income. He takes $120K in salary. Its only been in the last 7-8 years from what I've been told that the company got real profitable. He used to do a lot of commercial work which doesn't bring much money around here. Now we try to stick with industrial work, with refrigeration our big bread winner. We do maintain business with a super market company and build 1-2 supermarkets per year. They can be ok profit wise as we've done so many we know what it's going to take.
We don't really have too many problems with other elec. contractors around here. We do so little work locally they don't bother us. Our biggest problem is the local IBEW hall. They cause us more problems. Hell, they can legally harass you and there's nothing you can do about it. Unions helped some people out, now, it's all about the Union making money. They actively try to destroy any non-union shop. Though from what I hear one local Union shop is trying to push them out and is using the rules to do it. They call for guys, and if they suck, send em home at noon with a full-day pay, never to be rehired back. Once you go through the hall, you can go outside the hall to get help. Gotta love legal uncompetitive business practices, extortion, etc. all in the name of "Workers' Rights."
