You can have .050" off in a couple hours. Have to make sure you're sanding even, hence the calipers. Also, the steel sleeve takes longer to sand than the aluminum, so try to sand it flat. I've done 3 or 4 engines this way and it works.
Of course, make sure you don't sand off too much and have your piston hit the head!
Leaving out the base gasket is another way to increase compression.

How-to shine your piston:

You'll need sandpaper, steel wool, a dremel with the abrasive buffs, rubbing compound, and brasso. It takes a while to do, but the process is obvious. Just start out with the rough stuff and end up with the brasso. A shiney surface keeps carbon from building up and makes more power by keeping the heat in the combustion chamber.

Specs / Info ?(Suzuki LT230S Vault)?
Where did you get 298 lbs? My book says 309 for 85 n 86 and 337 for the latter 2 years.
Also, did you know
"If in 1985, I bought goods or services for $1969, then in 2009, the same goods or services would cost $3996.56"
The Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis

3996.56 seems a little expensive. What's a 250EX or Z250 fetching these days? I think thee Ozark gets about 3699 or something.

About 315 lbs wet is the lightest I've had mine. Its up to 330 or so with the 250 engine, longer swingarm, and longer a-arms.
